Hemp seed oil: gentle care for all skin types

Hemp seed oil derives from the hemp plant's seeds, a cannabis plant cultivated for non-drug use. The oil is legal and used in cosmetics, nutritional supplementation, and skin oils.

While other kinds of hemp oil are rich in cannabinoids, hemp seed oil typically has no-to-few cannabinoids and contains mainly omega fatty acids (it contains high amounts of omega-3-fatty acids). As a result, you can already find it in various skincare products.

What should you know about Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp oil acts as a soothing and moisturizing oil in cases of mild acne especially. In addition, it may reduce inflammation, calm acne-related redness, and regulate oil production.

Generally, acne-prone or people with combination skin can find good results using this oil. This hemp-derived product is rich in fatty acids; it may balance your skin's natural barrier and oil production.

This oil works well with acids and retinoids as it may mitigate their irritating effects. And some cosmetics legally combine hemp oil with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) of less than 0.3% concentration.

Make sure you know the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil. The latter absorbs into the skin and binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain. And it can affect anxiety, sleep, and many other conditions. And CBD can also have low levels of THC, which has notable psychoactive effects.

Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil for skin

Studies on the benefit of hemp seed oil on the skin are still scarce. However, with current research, positive effects have been discovered in the topical application of this oil.

    • It may regulate oil production: Hemp oil is perfect for most skin types as it can moisturize without clogging your pores. It can even help balance out oily skin and regulate its oil production
    • Rich in natural fatty acids: Hemp seed oil is high in omega acids 3, 6, and 9. All of which help repair the skin barrier and form a layer to maintain moisture. In addition, this composition of fatty acids also helps soften the skin and maintain its hydration.
    • Attracts moisture: It is also a humectant, which draws moisture to the skin.
    • Anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is a common sign of acne and various irritation-related topical conditions. The same omega acids in hemp seed oil also help calm inflammation in the skin.
    • Symptoms of skin aging: According to a 2015 journal article, hemp oil can treat and prevent the skin symptoms associated with aging. People consuming higher amounts of linoleic acid seem to have lower age-related dryness and atrophy.
    • UV damage and hyperpigmentation: Hemp contains both alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid. These acids help repair UV skin damage by increasing the removal of melanin.

Side-effects of Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is safe for most people to use. However, using it topically, some people may experience mild irritation, so apply a test patch of skin first.

How to use it

Naturally, the hemp seed oil is being integrated into plenty of beauty products as a hydrator and anti-inflammatory. Due to its composition, this oil helps counteract inflammation and redness caused by acne. So you can incorporate it into care to balance the skin.

Hydration enhances the absorption of hemp seed oil

Oil-based products are better tolerated on the skin when pre-conditioned with light hydration.
